Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970–1990 @ The V&A, London

What does postmodernism mean, and where did it come from? The V&A will explore these questions in the exhibition Postmodernism: Style and Subversion 1970–1990, which opens today in South Kensington. The exhibition will include 3D pieces by the likes of Hans Hollein and Ron Arad, as well as works by artists and photographers such as Andy Warhol and Robert Longo. As part of the exhibition, our very own Art Vinyl frames will be available to buy as part of the exhibition, allowing art and music enthusiasts to display their very own postmodernist vinyl records at home.

Never Records @ Merge Festival 2011

As part of the Merge Festival in London’s Bankside, New York artist Ted Riederer will be bringing his critically acclaimed multi media project Never Records to London for the first time this month. Never Records is an art installation in the guise of a record store that only stocks vinyl that has been cut in the shop itself. Using microphones and specialist vinyl-cutting turntable at one end of the “store” Riederer will be recording musicians and performers on the spot before giving them freshly pressed 12” records with individually signed sleeves. In a limited edition of 2, Riederer will give one record to the performer and will stock the other in the store.

Visitors will be able to select records from the racks to play within the store. Never Records explores the potential of using a record store and record label; to unite, educate, and uplift a community through recorded sound. Riederer’s project began in an abandoned Tower Records in New York City and has since been recreated around the world. The Wall Street Journal described the installation as a “mock shop” that served as a “love letter to the dying concept of the record store.”

If you’re a performer of any kind and would like to cut a record, or you’d simply like to go along and check out Riederer’s exciting work, the exhibition runs from today until 9th October as part of Merge Festival 2011.

Neutral Milk Hotel to Release New Vinyl Box Set

Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over the Sea - Illustrations by Brian Dewan

Last week, Rolling Stone reported that  Neutral Milk Hotel’s Jeff Mangum will be releasing a vinyl-only box set that compiles the group’s entire back catalogue, as well as a whopping 15 previously unreleased tracks. The huge box set includes two 12” albums (On Avery Island and In the Aeroplane Over the Sea), two 10” records (The Everything Is EP and Ferris Wheel on Fire EP, two 7” records (Little Birds and You’ve Passed/Where You’ll Find Me Now), and one 7” picture disc. The box set also includes a couple of posters.

Retailing at $108 in the US (or more for international customers), it’s a pricey purchase but well worth it for die-hard fans of the band, and a dollar from each sale goes to the Children of the Blue Sky charity. Additionally, you can download the previously unreleased tracks from 22nd November on a pay-what-you-wish basis.

Available for pre-order sale here.
